Daily the economic news for our Great State gets worse.  1353
businesses closed their doors in Clark County last year. Over
30,000 foreclosed homes will soon go on the market.
Unemployment is at an all time high.  School enrollment is
decreasing because people are leaving the state.  A special
session of the legislature was recently called to cut a Billion
dollars from the state budget.  The next session may have to
address a deficit of almost 3 Billion dollars. Teachers,
firefighters, policemen and other state employees all feel as if
their jobs are in jeopardy. The time has come for a thorough
revision of our state finances.  When the legislature next
convenes the primary concern is to insure basic services are
met.  However, every budgeted item needs to be examined as
to it's need and cost effectiveness.  The waste and inefficiency
in state finances can no longer be tolerated.  But first and
foremost our citizens can not in these tough economic times be
expected to dig deeper into their pockets.  Our legislators must
work diligently to craft a budget that covers essential state
needs without increasing taxes.
When the voters go to the polls this November they need to
elect candidates who have shown they understand the problem
confronting the state and will do everything possible to ensure
a swift recovery and a prosperous future for Nevada.

Over the past 2 years a bipartisan group of 14 respected
Nevadans from both parties volunteered their time reviewing
spending by state government.  They found that Nevada's future
is in serious jeopardy and that something must be done and
soon.  That we cannot wait for things to get better-we must
change the way we spend money in state government and we
must become more efficient.  We are running out of time and
money.
These Nevadans under the title of Nevada Spending and
Government Efficiency (SAGE) Commission made 44
recommendations that if implemented will save or enhanced state
revenues by about two Billion dollars over five years and result in
new efficiencies.
Despite being presented with this massive first step to solving
Nevada's state budget problems the last session of the legislature
did not implement these recommendations.  In the next budget
cycle Nevada faces a projected $3 Billion deficit on an $8 Billion
budget.  We can not wait any longer to adequately address this
critical problem.
